My annual vacation of 2013 was spent at the Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe. I chose this resort because I had clients going there for a wedding in May the following year. As their travel agent, I thought it best to check the place out so that I would be qualified to answer any questions that might arise and to anticipate any issues before they became a problem.
This resort is rated 5 stars. As its name implies, it sits on Bavaro beach in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. When we approached the resort from our airport transfer, I was impressed with their grand lobby. Our check-in went smoothly with very little wait time even though it was late Saturday afternoon. We were taken directly to our room by the bellman who handled our luggage.
My first impression of our room was that it was modern, had a nice layout and we’d be pretty comfortable there for the week. I was glad to have paid the small upcharge to this Junior Suite Deluxe. There was a minor mishap with our bedding preference (namely a clerical error on my part). I thought that I’d booked a king bed but we were given a room with two double beds. After a phone call to the Main Desk, we were told that they could correct the error the next day. After a day of travel, we decided that we would just unpack and stay in this room. We were situated fairly central in the resort which was important to us, so it made the decision easy to stay put.
Something I forgot to mention earlier, right after we were checked in, we were able to go directly to Guest Services which was right next door to the Main Desk to make our reservations for the a la carte restaurants. We could only make reservations for four restaurants at that time with instructions that we could come back another day to make more reservations for the rest of our stay.
This is a very large resort and there is a tram that travels continuously around the entire resort as well as the Adults Only Barcelo Bavaro Beach Resort which is right next door and actually part of the Palace Deluxe. Guests staying at the Beach Resort have full exchange privileges at the Palace Deluxe. But because the Beach resort is adults only, Palace guests do not have exchange privileges there.
The beach is very nice with lots of natural shade from all of the palm trees. We never had a problem finding an empty lounger no matter what time of day we arrived. The lounge chairs were a step above the norm as the leg portion adjusted to raise your knees. The water could get a little grassy at times, but if you wanted to swim in a clear area; there were no issues finding them. It wasn’s uncommon to see a group of workers raking up the grass at the shoreline.
The pools were large and again there were no issues with finding shade. There were completed covered areas which were much better than chasing the shade beneath a single umbrella. There were also waitresses that came around to deliver your beverages.
The buffet was large with lots of grill stations which kept the lines down. For breakfast, there were 8 different egg stations for your made to order omelets and your egg requests. I feel that they could have used a couple more toasters though.
I found the gym to be exceptional. It opened early enough with plenty of treadmills, eliptical machines and stationary bikes. There were weight machines and free weights. There were scheduled group gym activities but we did not participate in any. The gym was also air-conditioned.
We had dinner at the Seafood restaurant, the Steak restaurant, the Japanese hibachi restaurant, the Mexican restaurant and the Italian restaurant. We did not care for the food in the Italian restaurant. But that was a matter of our taste and not necessarily the resorts fault. One night, we took the tram to the 19th Hole. This restaurant doesn’t require reservations. We had the best NY strip steak of anywhere we’d been in the Dominican. It was a great all-American meal. The night that we’d gone, there were only two other guests dining there. It’s definitely a Do-Not-Miss. IMO, another Do-Not-Miss was a buffet meal at the Sports Bar. It’s open 24 hours.
There is plenty of shopping options at this resort that range from high end boutiques to the normal trinket and necessity market with your typical souvenir merchandise. The shops were fairly frequented by the guests at all times during the day and night. There were two shopping areas on this resort with the other being by the 19th Hole restaurant.
The night of our steak dinner, we happened upon the mini-golf and played a round. We were pleasantly surprised with the condition of the course. It was very well maintained.
My husband and I were very comfortable at this resort for the week we stayed and I would recommend it to anyone. We will definitely be repeat guests. If you have any questions or comments that you would like to add, please feel free. I would love to hear from you.
